Mahatma Gandhi, Heritage Owl Spotlight

Updated: May 9, 2023

South Asian, Indian lawyer and nationalist leader who led India to independence from Imperial rule through nonviolence.

Gandhi worked to improve the lives of India's poor and fought against discrimination and injustice. He developed the concept of Satyagraha, which means "truth-force" or "soul-force," which became the basis of his nonviolent resistance movement, with the mantra:

"say no to injustice firmly. Publicly and often illegally, but never violently, and accept the consequences of your actions."

The idea was non-violence, "turning the other cheek" and forgive without necessarily having to forgetthat later inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world (even in the United States). Martin Luther King Jr adopted Gandhi's nonviolent approach for social change during the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and 1960s.
